What types of projects are best suited for the 2 gal ArtResin kit?

ArtResin's 2 gal kit is perfect for multiple large art pieces or several smaller projects that require plenty of resin.

It covers up to 64 sq ft in total, ideal for artists who want to maximize creativity and value.

Can I pour 2 gallons of ArtResin at once, or should I mix smaller batches?

The amount of resin you pour all depends on the size of your projects. ArtResin has a working time of approximately 45 minutes, so if you're coating multiple pieces, it's best to mix several smaller batches and to work in groups. Doing this will help prevent the resin from thickening before you've had time to pour, spread, and torch your pieces. The last thing you want to do is rush through this process because it will affect your results.

However, if you require a large amount for a single large project, that's fine too! Just be prepared:

  • Mix your resin in a large pail using a sturdy stir stick or a drill with a silicone mixing attachment.
  • Be sure to scrape the sides and bottom of the pail, just as you would with a smaller batch.
  • Be aware that spreading and torching that much resin takes time, so it's a good idea to have an extra pair of hands to help.
  • Have a plan in place before you start to protect your large piece from dust while it cures. Many artists like to prop up large pieces of sturdy board, such as cardboard or canvas board, on top of paint cans to create a protective cover. Another great option is to build a simple frame out of wood and use a staple gun to attach heavy-duty plastic, creating a sturdy cover for your artwork. For added protection, drape a clean plastic drop sheet over the frame to form a tent-like structure that keeps dust out from all sides.

Can I mix pigments or additives in large-volume batches with this size?

Yes, you can add colorants or additives in large-volume batches of resin.

Follow the same guidelines as you would for smaller batches:

1. Always add your colorant after the resin and hardener have been measured and thoroughly mixed.
2. Do not exceed 6% colorant of the total combined volume of resin and hardener.

For example:

  • For 100 ml of mixed resin (50 ml resin and 50 ml hardener), add no more than 6 ml of colorant
  • For 1 L of mixed resin and hardener, add no more than 60 ml.
  • For 8 oz of mixed resin and hardener, add no more than 0.48 oz (about 1/2 fl oz or about 1 tablespoon).
  • For 1 gallon of mixed resin and hardener, add no more than 7.7 fl oz (slightly less than 1 cup).

Exceeding 6% will interfered with the resin's chemical reaction and prevent a proper cure. We recommend starting with less than you need and adding more as necessary.

What’s the best way to measure and mix large volumes of epoxy resin?

To mix large batches of epoxy resin, use a large clear, sturdy plastic pail with graduated measuring lines to ensure accuracy. After measuring, pour both parts into a larger bucket for mixing. You can stir by hand using a large stir stick or mix slowly with drill fitted with a silicone mixing attachment. Avoid whipping the resin, which can introduce bubbles.

Be sure to scrape the sides and bottom of the bucket as you mix, and extend your mixing time beyond 3 minutes to ensure all components are thoroughly blended. The mixture should appear uniform with no visible striations.

Alternatively, you can measure by weight using a scale at a ratio of 100 part of resin to 84 parts of hardener.

Keep in mind that ArtResin has a 45-minute working time, so only mix what you can pour and spread within that window. For very large pieces, having an extra pair of hands can make spreading and torching much easier.

What’s the working time once I mix the resin and hardener?

ArtResin has a working time of about 45 minutes before it begins to cure and becomes too thick to spread. For best results, pour and apply the resin immediately after mixing for 3 minutes.

Temperature note: Heat will shorten your working time. If you warm the resin in a water bath, expect to lose about 10 minutes. Likewise, in spaces above 85°F (25°C), both working and cure times will be reduced. Always keep your workspace temperature in mind to get the best results.

How do I remove bubbles from large surface pours using this size?

Nothing beats a propane torch when applying epoxy resin to a large piece of artwork. It removes bubbles from a large surface area with ease and efficiency.

Do an initial pass with the propane torch to remove bubbles, and then give it a light follow up about 10 minutes later to catch any bubbles you may have missed, or new ones that may have popped up.

After you've removed bubbles with the torch, inspect the resin under a good light source for dust, hair and other surface contaminants. These can be removed with a toothpick.

It pays to babysit your work for the first 30-60 minutes. Check for bubbles or dust every 10 minutes or so and remove with a toothpick.

See our Maker's Propane Torch Head.

Is this kit safe for use in a studio or for workshops?

Yes, ArtResin emits no fumes or VOCs, so whether you use it at home, in a studio setting, or even outdoors is entirely up to you.

Ensure you're working in a dust-free, well-ventilated space.

Warm and dry conditions are best when when working with ArtResin. The ideal working temperature is 75-85°F or 24-30°C with 50% humidity, but you can work with anything below 80%.

The temperature should stay stable for the first 24 hours - if the temperature dipsm you may end up with dimples in your cured resin.

Is the 2 gallon ArtResin kit ideal for countertops, tabletops, or large wall art?

ArtResin epoxy resin is durable and food safe once fully cured, but keep in mind that it was designed as a surface coating for artwork. While it is scratch-resistant, it’s not scratch-proof.

On the other hand, our Industrial Clear epoxy resin was specifically formulated to handle tough situations and high-traffic areas like counters, tabletops, bartops and floors.
