What safety precautions should I take when using ArtResin?

ArtResin is non-toxic when used as directed and conforms to ASTM D-4236, meaning it has been evaluated as safe for home use. However, it's still important to follow a few basic safety guidelines:

  • Wear gloves: Protect your skin from a sticky mess and possible irritation. If resin gets on your skin, wash it off promptly with soap and water.
  • Protect your eyes: If resin comes into contact with your eyes, flush them immediately with water and seek medical attention.
  • Work in a well-ventilated space: If ventilation is limited, wear a respirator for added safety.

For more detailed health and safety information, refer to ArtResin's Safety Data Sheet and visit our blog: What Safety Precautions Should I Take When Using ArtResin Epoxy Resin?

What surfaces can I use ArtResin on?

ArtResin bonds to most surfaces including wood, photographs, inkjet prints, ink, oil pastel, paper collage, canvas, fabric, metal, glass, sculptures, flowers, rocks, and fully dried paint acrylic, oil, watercolor, and spray paint.

It does not adhere well to materials that repel water such as wax, oil, and plastics, including silicone.

Loose materials such as glitter or chalk pastel may float in the liquid resin. Porous materials such as clay or soft papers may absorb resin; apply a sealant first to create a barrier.

We always recommend testing your materials with resin before beginning your project. Enjoy experimenting!

For more information, please see our blog: What Materials Can I Or Can't I Use Epoxy Resin On?

How do I mix the resin and hardener properly?

To mix ArtResin properly, first measure equal amounts of resin by volume (not weight). Pour both parts into a mixing container.

Next, stir slowly but thoroughly for at least 3 minutes, scraping the sides and bottom as you go.

Accurate measuring and proper mixing are essential - if the amounts are altered or the resin isn't fully blended, your resin will remain sticky and uncured.

Can I layer multiple pours with ArtResin?

Yes, you can apply multiple layers of ArtResin to build depth, cover areas of high-relief, or to repair imperfections.

The ideal thickness for each pour is 1/8" (3 mm) to help prevent trapped bubbles. You can pour additional layers once the previous one reaches the gel stage (after about 3-5 hours) or after it has fully cured.

If the first layer has cured completely, scuff the surface with sandpaper to create texture for the new layer to adhere to. Clean the surface, then mix and pour your next coat as usual. The scuff marks will disappear once the new resin layer is applied.

Is ArtResin food safe once cured?

Yes, once fully cured, ArtResin can be safely used as a food contact surface.

ArtResin has been rigorously tested by a third party for leaching and migration across global standards and passed every test: when used as directed, cured ArtResin is inert and will not transfer any substances into food.

Please note: Once you add colorants or other additives to your ArtResin mixture, it is no longer be considered food safe. However, applying a final topcoat of clear ArtResin will restore its food-safe status.

What pigments or additives can I safely use with ArtResin?

You can mix ArtResin with ResinTint liquid pigments, resin paste, mica powder, alcohol ink or glitter to create beautiful, colorful effects.

For the best results, keep the following tips in mind:

  • No matter which colorant you use, do not add more than 6% of the total combined volume of resin and hardener to ensure proper curing.
  • Add you chosen colorant after mixing the resin and hardener for smooth, even color.
  • Avoid water-based pigments like acrylic paint - they can cause the resin to thicken or cure too quickly.
  • If using alcohol ink or other colorants that contain solvents, note that it is flammable - use a heat gun rather than a flame torch.
  • Once you add colorants or other additives to your ArtResin mixture, it is no longer be considered food safe. However, applying a final topcoat of clear ArtResin will restore its food-safe status.

    Looks like glass

I like how the rain looks and it’s easy to mix. Directions are simple. The only problem I have is on a large piece it always wins if the edges and leaves a spot that doesn’t hold it on. I’ve gone over the edges so many times and I still can’t get it to stay. I would be able to sell a piece like that. But for me it’s ok I guess.

    Love Art Resin

I love this epoxy resin. These pics don’t do it, or the art, justice. But here’s 3 pieces I did for sisters with their favorite colors.
