Congratulations to Sarah Rimboch, our latest ArtResin winner! Sarah is a mixed media artist from Houston, Texas who creates pet portraits, abstracts, and 3-dimensional wall sculptures: "I create a variety of styles but resin is what ties all of them together."
Does where you're from or where you currently live influence your work?
My work is influenced by my interests and life experiences rather than where I’m from or where I currently live.
What's your art background? Are you self-taught or did you study art?
I have a bachelors in arts education so I learned how to teach art but also took studio courses. My art focus was in printmaking but I also dabbled in ceramics, glass blowing, and photography along with painting of course. My resin work is all self taught.
Are you a full-time artist or do you create around work hours?
I’ve been a full time artist since June 2021. Prior to full time, I taught elementary art for 7 years while pursuing my art career.
What do you love about the mediums that you use in your work?
I enjoy how versatile resin is. I find that it compliments many of the other mediums I use and makes my work more playful and vibrant!
How did you discover resin?
I discovered it in 2017 when I was exploring with fluid paints for the first time. After just a small amount of research, I stumbled upon resin and tried it out. I’ve been using it ever since!
How has resin impacted your artwork?
Resin has impacted my work by elevating it. The high gloss makes it feel more polished and finished than if I were to use a varnish. It’s hard to match!
Can you provide a brief rundown of your process?
My art process changes a lot depending on the series of work I’m doing. I include some woodworking in my art so am often using a scroll saw prior to any painting or resining. When I’m resining, I always prepare my work space to make it as clean and ideal for the resin as possible. This includes using an air purifier, dehumidifier, or space heater if needed. I always tape off the bottom of whatever I’m resining. And then make sure I have any ppe that I use when working with resin.
Why do you want to make art? What motivates you to create?
Does art help you in other areas of your life?
Yes, I think art has given me patience, perspective, acceptance. It’s given me the ability to get creative in other aspects of my life. It brings me joy, whether it’s my work or someone else’s. And it gives me confidence. Sharing artwork can leave you feeling vulnerable but the longer you do it, the more confident you become!

What do you hope someone sees or feels when they look at your art?
I have a lot of different styles of artwork. I do believe each style or series can bring about different feelings for different viewers. Viewing art is so personal and I think your own experiences make you see things in a different light. So one person may view my work and experience a feeling of joy while another person may experience a place or even a period of time. Ultimately, I hope my viewers experiences joy or appreciation when they view my work. I hope that they are able to connect to it in a way that is unique to them. How do you define success as an artist? What does that look and feel like for you?
I think there’s success every time I create something I love and there’s even more success when I sell work that I love. It’s a celebration that someone loves my work as much as I do, but also a celebration that I’m making a living off of something I love to do. As artists, if we don’t sell, we can’t create so selling the work really is an important part of being successful as an artist. With that being said, I’m for hire and I have art available! LolWhat's your favorite resin tip you'd like to share with our readers?
I’ve learned over the years that the setting you do your resining in is the absolute most important thing. Air quality is so important so I like to use an air purifier to help remove unwanted dust from the air. If you live in a humid climate like I do, making sure to have a dehumidifier to keep humidity at a level that’s workable. Keeping the space at a temperature that works for resin so using a space heater during colder months. I could go on and on but those are all so important to me.

Where do you sell your work?
I currently sell my work on my website and social media. I previously had a public art studio and would sell there as well, but now just work from home because I’m also a new mom! I’ve done a lot of art shows and markets over the years as well.Congratulations on your win, Sarah!
