Lucy Peveto Is Our Instagram Winner!

Congratulations to artist Lucy Peveto, our latest ArtResin winner!
An artist based in San Antonio, Texas, Lucy creates dreamy mixed media paintings: “I like to create abstract settings for butterflies which I preserve with resin. I either am creating an abstract view from inside a cocoon or a field of flowers.

Fun fact: Lucy was one of our very first ArtResin customers when we launched back in 2015! We’re so grateful for Lucy’s support over the past 10 years.

Please enjoy her beautiful artwork.

Does where you're from or where you currently live influence your work?
San Antonio is such a vibrant city and its annual celebrations are full of color which is a huge inspiration in my work.

What's your art background?  Are you self-taught or did you study art?
I actually am an attorney and am mostly self taught.  San Antonio’s Southwest School of Art (now called UTSA School of Art) has great art programs and I have taken some of those including drawing, pigment, and mixed media.

Are you a full-time artist or do you create around work hours?
I have been a full time artist for over ten years.

What do you love about the mediums that you use in your work?
I love many different types of mediums such as vellum, papers, ink, oils, spray paint, gold leaf, watercolor and acrylics.  I have been able to incorporate resin in both a smooth finish, layered in-between different mediums and even in 3d sculptural pieces.  Art Resin has definitely been fun to use in so many ways and is the medium I am asked most often about.

How did you discover resin?
Before ArtResin came onto the market, I would use marine-grade formulas to coat my photography.  I became obsessed with understanding its properties and was constantly researching and watching on-line videos.  I learned of ArtResin in some of those videos.   I remember your founders in these videos coating large paintings, a tree stump and even repairing the broken sole of a shoe!  I was immediately hooked on the UV protection and fume free substance and I started using it more and more with confidence.

How has resin impacted your artwork?
Resin has allowed me to be more creative in my work by giving me more depth to my work, both in the deep glossy finish but also to use it as additional mediums with alcohol inks and allowing me to mix layers of acrylic and oil paints.

Without resin I would not be able to achieve the depths and thicknesses my butterfly paintings require.

Can you provide a brief rundown of your process?
I start my process in my messy studio.  I love to have the canvases (wood panels) propped up on the walls and I sit on the floor with all types of materials spread out around me and several rags, paintbrushes, spray bottles, boxes of oil paints etc.  I will start with an abstract style and start painting flowers until I am satisfied or exhausted or lost the light in the room.  At the same time, I will be moving across the room to use leftover paint on the beginning of an abstract piece.  The next step is to use an old paint brush to apply resin selectively and create an uneven texture.  I repeat this process many times both destroying the original image formations and then bringing them back in a later layer.  Finally I apply the butterflies and do a deep pour.

Why do you want to make art? What motivates you to create?
Making art is the most exciting thing in the world to me!  There’s no other outlet in my life where it feels like you’re on a runaway rollercoaster yet you are the one in control.  My studio is my happy place!

Does art help you in other areas of your life?
Art may be the reason I think about things differently than other people and I tend to have a unique perspective.  I appreciate that the solitude in creating art gives me the opportunity to think deeply about all types of things.  Additionally, I love to give back to my community with my artwork as gifts and donations.  I also just love to create and have organized parties with friends where we will all work on a project together and I love that!

What do you hope someone sees or feels when they look at your art?
When someone looks at my art and my butterflies, I hope they feel a sense of movement and becoming.  I want them to see that change is not only possible, but beautiful.  I hope it causes people to pause and reflect on that and that makes it meaningful to me.

How do you define success as an artist? What does that look and feel like for you?
Success is when you feel a connection to your work and it brings you joy.  The cherry on top is when someone else finds joy in it as well.

What's your favorite resin tip you'd like to share with our readers?
‘Pro-Tip’  When I am pouring my first few layers of resin I will use blue painters’ tape around my canvas (I always paint on wood panel) to create a higher edge.  When I am ready to let the resin drip over the sides I remove the tape and lightly sand the edges.  I re-use the tape on the back of the painting so that after the final pour I can remove it and any drips/drops that may have formed underneath.

Where do you sell your work?
I sell my work at art galleries and online.

Congratulations on your win, Lucy!
