Congratulations to artist Kay Angel, our latest Instagram winner! Kay is a full-time artist living in Okinawa, Japan who specializes in ocean-inspired resin art: "I love making waves because I see different results each time. I make something unique each time."
Describe the type of art you create.
Ocean inspired resin art, and flowers preserved in resin.
What’s your art background? Are you self taught or did you study art?
I learned acrylic painting when I was in high school. I studied Graphic Design at University.
Does where you’re from or where you currently live influence your work?
My influences come from living in California near the coast and now living on the island of Okinawa in Japan .
What do you love about the mediums that you use?
I really like the crystal clear results that I get with using resin.
When did you discover resin?
3 years ago
How has resin impacted your artwork?
Working with resin has reignited my love for painting and designing.
Can you provide a brief rundown of your process?
I start with deciding what want to put the ocean waves on, such as glass or wooden design boards, and then I mix resin with some colored pigment, pour onto the surface, let it dry and and blow the resin with a heat gun.
What do you hope someone sees or feels when they look at your art?
I hope that they are able to imagine themselves on a beach somewhere.
How do you define success as an artist? What does success look and feel like for you?
Being able to create art that you are proud of and other people appreciate. To me success is when a person purchases an item from me and lets me know that they love the item.
Where do you sell your work?
Mostly online or at craft festivals.
