Congratulations to artist Anne Shackelford, our latest Instagram winner! Based in Austin, TX, Anne is a multimedia designer who incorporates natural objects such as flint rock, shells, crystals, glass fragments, leaves, and wood into her work. She combines these elements with sacred geometry, alcohol inks, pigments, gold leaf, and resin to create textured, high-vibrational pieces. Anne's artwork "invites the harmony of nature’s blueprint into your space."
Does where you're from or where you currently live influence your work?
Of course! I go hiking every morning with my pups, always looking at nature's treasures and inspiration. Like most artists, I “draw” from Mother Nature, collaborating to create pieces that bring joy and harmony into their lives!
What's your art background? Are you self taught or did you study art?
Self taught.
Are you a full time artist or do you create around work hours?
Kind of? I have been a hairstylist for 25 years, I work 4 days a week doing hair and commit all the rest of the time I can to creating art!
What do you love about the mediums that you use?
The infinite variety. :)
When did you discover resin?
I have known of and wanted to play with it for well over 15 years, BUT I was wrapped up in bodypainting, fire dancing, teaching yoga, costume design, etc so it wasn’t until about 4 years ago I invested in and started playing with ArtResin.
How has resin impacted your artwork?
A great deal!!! I LOVE resin. It is magical and challenging and fun and crazy. Letting go of control and going with the flow!
Can you provide a brief rundown of your process?
I am inspired during meditation, dreaming, and walks in nature. In my art studio I have three singing bowls, I play them while praying, with sage and incense. I bless each piece before, during and after their creation. Sometimes I have a plan, but I have learned not to get too attached and to just go with the flow, because it ALWAYS changes. My work can have up to ten layers! Not just resin, but all the materials - resin, paint, gold leaf, varnishes, pigments, glitter, rocks, crystals, molds, textures, etc add up!
I always infuse each piece with high vibrations and healing intentions, but each piece is unique, no two are the same!
Why do you want to make art? What motivates you to create?
Art heals me, keeps me in a high vibrational zone, and brings me and others joy!
Does art help you in other areas of your life?
Art heals me, keeps me in a high vibrational zone, and brings me and others joy! ;)
What do you hope someone sees or feels when they look at your art?
I have a prayer for my art, my studio and my patrons, here is a piece of it:
“This artwork imbues the viewer with light, balance, joy and harmony in their physical, emotional, and mental bodies. They experience greater personal power, clarity, peace, love, gratitude and joy. Energy patterns are brought into alignment by the rhythm of nature's design. Each element of all creation- water, fire, wind and earth, are balanced in their space and they receive energy from all of these sources to stay positive, strong and aligned in perfect harmony.”
How do you define success as an artist? What does success look and feel like for you?
Loaded question- but “success” for me would be creating all the art that brings me and others joy, full time. I do not need more than I have, but I would like to sustain my life, JUST doing art, no more hair!
Where do you sell your work?
All over ATX!
Congratulations on your win, Anne!
