Congratulations to artist Lindsey Waters, our latest Instagram Winner! Based in Shreveport, LA, Lindsey is an abstract mixed media collage artist who creates vivid, colorful, abstract collages on wood panels: "I use many mediums from acrylic paints, alcohol inks, gouache and watercolor on Yupo paper to create my collage material."
Does where you're from or where you currently live influence your work?
Yes, my Native American background and Louisiana’s diverse cultural heritage influences the vibrant colors and geometric shapes found in my artwork.
What's your art background? Are you self-taught or did you study art?
I studied Studio Art with a concentration on painting and drawing at Louisiana Tech University, I received my BFA in 2012. Before college I would do Van Gogh portrait master copies in oil pastel.
Are you a full-time artist or do you create around work hours?
I am currently working a full-time job and make my art after work hours.
What do you love about the mediums that you use in your work?
The main thing I love about the mediums I use is the Yupo paper. The bright white surface allows the paints and inks I use to have beautiful color vibrancy and transparency. The plasticity of the paper allows for smooth cuts and clean lines.
How did you discover resin?
I discovered resin in college during a 3D Design class, my professor suggested using it to encase a dreamcatcher I made. I have been addicted to the gloss and the way it makes colors pop ever since.
How has resin impacted your artwork?
Resin has made a huge impact on helping my artwork feel refined, from enhancing the vivid colors as well as adding depth and dimension. It has become integral to my process.
Can you provide a brief rundown of your process?
I start with vibrant color studies on a plastic paper called Yupo and then meticulously cut them into tiny linear strips or square pieces. I think of these paintings almost as gestural drawings, working in a very loose manner. I then rearrange the pieces and often use multiple paintings in one collage, sometimes the pieces are woven or overlap with several layers. My work is very process driven as I explore how to put the pieces back together and the varied forms and color combinations they create.
Why do you want to make art? What motivates you to create?
I make art as a form of therapy for my anxieties as the process of cutting up the paintings and putting them back together helps me to relieve stress and get into a flow state. I am motivated to make art through exploration of new techniques and materials that allows me to push my boundaries and challenge myself creatively.
Does art help you in other areas of your life?
Yes, making art has helped me to get out of my comfort zone and be a more social person.
What do you hope someone sees or feels when they look at your art?
I hope viewers of my art feel excitement and wonder. I want the colors and movement to be nearly overwhelming and hypnotizing.
How do you define success as an artist? What does that look and feel like for you?
For myself, I define success as an artist as involving continual growth and development, expanding my skills and exploring new techniques as well as pushing creative boundaries.
What's your favorite resin tip?
My best resin tip is when pouring into measuring cup don’t pour into the middle as this can draw more air bubbles in. Instead pour it down the edges and it will flow in without adding extra bubbles.
Where do you sell your work?
I sell my artwork online through my Etsy shop etsy.com/artbynano and on saatchiart.com/artbynano and at local art markets.
