Congratulations to artist Alexis Beaverson, our latest Instagram winner! Alexis is a mixed media artist based in Bowling Green, Ohio who uses joint compound, acrylic paint, and resin to create her glossy, vibrantly colored, 3D artwork.
Does where you're from or where you currently live influence your work?
Definitely, it's very flat in Ohio so I get a clear view of sunrises, and sunsets. I take a lot of inspiration from the nature surrounding me, including the woods. I pull patterns and colors from it.
What's your art background? Are you self taught or did you study art?
What's your art background? Are you self taught or did you study art?
I only took art classes throughout high school, so mostly I am self taught. I have been making art for as long as I can remember!
Are you a full time artist or do you create around work hours?
I create around work hours, I only work 25-30 hours a week so I can really focus on painting.

What do you love about the mediums that you use?
I love joint compound because it has the texture of frosting and is very fun to shape and paint, and I love resin because it really levels up every painting by bringing out the colors I use and it seals the painting in for a lifetime, making each painting a lot more durable.
When did you discover resin?
I discovered resin 4 years ago while scrolling through social media and thought it would be an amazing way to level up my paintings.
How has resin impacted your artwork?
I really feel like with all the mediums I use together, the resin really ties it all together! It makes each painting more eye catching and I get a lot of questions about what kind of finish I use.

Can you provide a brief rundown of your process?
I put joint compound in a frosting piping bag like you would when decorating a cake. I pipe the joint compound onto wood and use water and a paint brush to smooth it and get the exact shape that I want. After it dries, I paint with acrylic paint and then I seal with resin!

Why do you want to make art? What motivates you to create?
I want to make art because it's the ONLY thing in life that I have complete control over, also I can help to inspire others to create and spark ideas within them. Every day life motivates me to create, all the feelings that come along with it and the thought of one day filling a gallery with all of my work!

Does art help you in other areas of your life?
Art helps me in all aspects of life, it has taught me a tremendous amount of self discipline, and it has taught me to listen to my intuition. Creating also helps me connect to the people and world around me.

What do you hope someone sees or feels when they look at your art?
I hope people feel inspired to create, inspired to ask questions within themselves and out, and most of all I want people to feel like its okay and possible to pursue whatever it is that makes them feel alive.

How do you define success as an artist? What does success look and feel like for you?
I define success as an artist as being able to conjure feelings in others through my work, and connecting with as many people as I can that will appreciate my work like I do!
