Congratulations to John Joseph Hanright, our latest ArtResin winner! John is a Boston-based artist who works in a variety of mediums to create his pieces: "I don’t like being pigeonholed as one type of artist. I create art that celebrates. My subjects range from American Flags, Women, Beach Culture and Icons. My work ranges from sexy to playful with a sense of discovery in each work."

Does where you're from or where you currently live influence your work?
I would say no, but my travels and experiences have certainly had an impact with ideas of work.
What's your art background? Are you self-taught or did you study art?
I was always an artist growing up then studied and graduated from Montserrat College of Art in MA.
Are you a full-time artist or do you create around work hours?
I am a full time artist.

What do you love about the mediums that you use in your work?
I love the looseness of paint, the images and story of ephemera, and the impact text can have. I do love using ArtResin to finish my work, it’s like it gets plugged into electricity and comes alive.
How did you discover resin?
I discovered resin while searching for a sealer for my paintings. After lots of research Art Resin is the safest and easiest!
How has resin impacted your artwork?
Using Resin completes my work, as there is no question it is finished. It brings out colors, protects and seals the ephemera common in my work.

Can you provide a brief rundown of your process?
My process begins with an idea or thought I have had from a movie, song or experience. I write all down and refer to them when preparing for a work. Work begins with a base layer of collaged ephemera, then my subject is sketched and ultimately painted. I will add additional text, images and paint until it is finished and Resin’d.
Why do you want to make art? What motivates you to create?
I create to communicate with the world, to make people think, and to capture moments. I would hope anyone viewing my work has multiple art experiences and continues to discover images and thoughts both provocative and static.
Does art help you in other areas of your life?
Art can be therapeutic and an escape while in studio.

What do you hope someone sees or feels when they look at your art?
I would hope someone has their own individual art experience while discovering my work. I hope it’s a sense of discovery and touches on their own past or present day life.
How do you define success as an artist? What does that look and feel like for you?
Success for me is having a client or viewer so taken by my work that it truly resonates with them. Not just liking a work because of color or subject but how it touches them individually.
What's your favorite resin tip you'd like to share with our readers?
My best tip would be mix, mix, mix and then mix some more. Make sure the resin is completely incorporated and work is level!
Where do you sell your work?
My work is sold through galleries across the US and Canada
