@yvetka.art Is Our Instagram Winner!

Congratulations to artist Yvette Grishina, our latest Instagram Winner! Based in Montreal, Quebec, Yvette creates textured art on wood panels: "I create abstract art pieces. I use modeling paste for texture and resin as a finishing touch to elevate the look. I can describe my pieces as modern, elegant, and simple. Each of my pieces has a hint of language and philosophy. My goal is for people to connect their life to the art piece they see."

Does where you’re from or where you currently live influence your work?
The whole world influences my work! I am most inspired by my travels as my five senses experience new things.

What’s your art background?
I was born creative and artistic, I never studied art!

Are you a full time artist or do you create around work hours?
For now, creating art is a part-time hobby. Keyword: “for now” :)

What do you love about the mediums that you use?
I love using texture as it creates a 3-D effect, resin for the glossy look, and colorful paint for an enchanting experience.

When did you discover resin?
I discovered resin about five years ago. I stumbled upon YouTube videos of people creating art with this medium. I got rapidly intrigued!

How has resin impacted your artwork?
Can you provide a brief rundown of your process?
1) I cover the back of a wood panel with painter’s tape for protection and prepare the front and sides of the panel with gesso.
2) Once the gesso is dry, I prepare the texture mixture and apply it to the wood panel.
3) After 48 hours, the texture is usually dry. I then cover the art piece with transparent resin. I don’t add anything to the resin.
4) Finishing touches are removing the painter’s tape from the back of the panel with a heat gun, sanding, and cleaning. I also sign and apply an authentication stamp on the back of the panel.

Why do you want to make art? What motivates you to create?
I find that we all get caught up in our day-to-day life and habits. We forget to stop and think of what truly matters to us. I try to convey philosophical thoughts through each piece and add a title in a different language. When I create a custom piece, I incorporate the client’s values and beliefs with my artistic style. I want my clients to look at their art piece and remind themselves of what is truly important for them.

Does art help you in other areas of your life?
Absolutely! Art helps me in all areas of my life. It allows me to be more patient in my personal relationships. It allows me to be more creative and open minded at work. It allows me to meditate and reflect when I’m alone with myself. It is free medicine!

What do you hope someone sees or feels when they look at your art?
When people look at my art, I hope they feel a connection to their personal life. I hope they see themselves in the piece.

How do you define success as an artist?  What does success look and feel like for you?
Success as an artist means that I have found mediums that work for me and use them to create a desired effect. It means that I know how to incorporate my art with other people’s ideas, not only my own. It means that people can truly appreciate my reason to create. Success also means to have my own studio and live from my art!
