Can I Get a Really Thick Coat of Resin on my Artwork?

Yes, you absolutely can and we'll show you how!

ArtResin self-levels at approximately 1/8", which is enough to give a gorgeous glossy coating (and waaaaay thicker than varnish!)... but sometimes you may want a REALLY thick coat for certain pieces.  Here's how.

As you see in the video above, you have to create a barrier or dam along the edges of your piece in order to create a reservoir where the resin can pool to a depth thicker than its natural self-levelled thickness.  Tape will work to create this barrier, however the thicker, wider and stronger you can get the tape, the better.

Apply the tape to the sides of the piece, allowing a ridge of tape to stick up.  Fold the tape back onto itself so the resin will not touch its sticky side once poured.  Pour the resin into your dammed in area, no thicker than 1/8" at a time.  This will allow bubbles to escape properly.  Once this layer of resin has set up (usually after about 4 hours), you can go ahead and pour another layer on top.  Repeat as many times as you like.  When all the resin is cured, pull the tape off carefully and use a table saw to tidy the edges (cutting through the thick resin, artwork and wooden panel).
